The importance of strategy, the need to form tactics for different matchups, is ever more relevant. At times you are able to barrel into a dribbler, completely taking him out and the ref won't even bat an eye, and other times you may lightly side bump an opponent and be immediately given a yellow yard. Some tackle and slide techniques do lack some fine qualities, though, in their consistency of success referee calls can be shaky too. Fighting for balls, jockeying for position, and using your mass to block out defenders all help create fast-paced and intense football. Like real players, players in-game have different attributes and will react to each other, as well as to the pitch in such a manner. From button push to player movement, most mechanics are fluid with a touch of realism. The control layouts make it possible to quickly learn all of the fancy tricks without making you feel like you are just randomly pushing and holding buttons. Jumping right into the action on the pitch, controls are smooth and reactive. It’s all about making you feel like you’re a part of it all and to get you hyped for what’s to come. Heading into matches, you will presented with real-life cut-scenes along with pre-game player preparation routines. The “feeling” of the game hasn’t been this refreshing in years. Like past editions, simplicity rings true to the action, but unlike past editions, there’s more of a complete presentation and a better overall experience. It’s still PES Productions’ best effort in some time, but the poor port is a bitter letdown.It hasn’t been just about all of the game modes or in-game interactions that defines PES as a franchise, so much as the small subtleties the attention to detail. On consoles, PES 2016 successfully captures football’s complexities in the fastest, freshest and most responsive entry in years.

There’s a strong sense of ownership over your developing squad as you lead them into battle offline and on. Unlike in FIFA Ultimate Team, where players form chemistry with each other based on nationalities, here it’s how well they gel with the manager’s style, and while hunting for superstars can start to cost actual money, there are cheaper routes to building your dream team, whether utilising training or getting lucky with a scout. M圜lub makes more sense by focusing on the fundamentals of squad building. Diego Costa just doesn't look right in canary yellow. Select Chelsea, for instance, and you’ll manage a team called London FC who play out of a generic toilet bowl stadium. The lack of authenticity continues to hurt the Master League career mode.
I like to run around inappropriately before jumping high. Now button commands let you control celebrations. You can, however, import edited strips, logos and team files. License-wise the UEFA Champions League remains a coup, but the omission of most of the Bundesliga, and a lack of official Premier League teams aside from Manchester United, cheapens the experience. At one point I run over to the advertising hoarding and my player jumps on it, arms pumping. Sweat runs, kits muddy, players grimace during jostles, and there are some great contextual goal celebrations. Still, in this curious mix of last-gen and new-gen, there is detail to be found. It seems Konami can’t wait to ditch videogames and storm the pachinko market. Konami's other Fox Engine game, The Phantom Pain, performs excellently on PC, and even the last PES was solid, so why this looks and runs like a PS3/360 game is a mystery. Football boots look like blurred lumps of clay, logos across formally crisp kits are stretched and ugly, and the pitchside police basically waltzed in from a Playmobil set. It practically runs in slow motion (I actually had to whack the game speed on ‘fast’ just to bring it up to standard), and textures are hideous. Where PES 2016 falls down, however, is this port’s surprisingly poor quality.
